https://www.dasselhistorycenter.comPermanent and changing exhibits at the Dassel History Center are housed in the historic Universal Laboratories building, built in 1937. The ULB is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2006, it was named one of the top 25 preservation projects in Minnesota by the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota. It was selected from 1500 museums on the National Register.
Ergot, a truly fascinating fungus, is a medical story that reaches all around the world and back in time to the beginning of agriculture 13,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent. Ergotism, a disease caused from ingesting ergot, was a blight on humanity causing death by gangrene and by attacking the neurological system.
(A preview of the permanent exhibit to be installed next year)
The hybridization of seed corn was named by Time magazine as one of the one hundred “most significant events that have shaped our world during the past 1,000 years.” Dassel is part of that story.
A natural accompaniment to the Ergot exhibit is the Dassel pharmacy story. Since 1872, Dassel has been able to provide its citizens with this medical support. In the past doctors would employ their own pharmacist, so there could be any number of them in Dassel at one time. In the 1880s pharmacists began opening their own businesses.
A young, Swedish immigrant chose Meeker County as his home in 1894. It is a pleasure to share the story of Magnus, our neighbor. Like a great many Dassel early residents, he came to the U.S. alone, was poor, had schooling only to the age of 12, couldn’t speak English and became a farmer.
Changing exhibits are also an important element to the DAHS.
Currently Our museum offers
Hildred Gets her Star, the story of Dassel's own munchkin from The Wizard of Oz on our fourth floor
DAHS continues to build our research collection. It chronicles the cities of Dassel, Kingston and Darwin and the townships of Kingston, Dassel, Darwin, Ellsworth and Collinwood.
To date our research collection includes these and other items:
The Dassel History Center serves as a cultural hub for the community, featuring visual arts, theater, literature and humanities-related programming.
Fence MuralsPaintings done by thirteen artists with ties to the Dassel area illustrate the essence of life here. From highly realistic to whimsically abstract, each mural features an aspect of the community through the eyes of the artists. These amazing works provide free, accessible public art to residents and visitors.

As a community we often celebrate courage. A good example of courage from our city’s history is that shown by early pioneer Noah Parks. Parks enlisted in the Pennsylvania military in 1861 not once, but twice, first with the 15th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry. When that disbanded, he joined the 9thRegiment, Pennsylvania Cavalry. The action list of those regiments was extensive, with engagements against the confederacy all over the central US.

In late October 1893, just a couple weeks after the Dassel Anchor became the newest newspaper to be published in Dassel, it carried the story of a traffic accident. Like so many accidents today, it resulted from a strange combination of unforeseeable events leading to a quickly developing disaster.
John M. Johnson, his wife, Louis Clarquist, her daughter, and George Runquist boarded the Johnson two seat covered buggy and headed out on a trip into the country.

On a Saturday afternoon in late February, 1916, the Dassel Auditorium was jammed to the doors. It wasn’t a dance or a ball game that attracted the huge crowd. These were all farmers arriving to pick up their pickle seed for the 1916 growing season and hear a talk from a representative of the Gedney Pickle Company.

In the spring of 1925, Levi Danielson of rural Dassel had quite a surprise. When he opened the cover of the cistern he used as a water reservoir for his livestock, there floated a badly decomposed body. The authorities were advised and they removed the body to the Eckman Undertaking Parlor.
An autopsy was performed by Drs. Peterson and Wilmont and Coronor Robertson where it was discovered the man had been crushed over the left temple by a heavy blow such as might be produced by an ax. It was evident the man was dead before being tossed into the cistern.

Meeker County is known for many important and slightly unique products including seed corn, ergot, chickens (Red Roosters) and the more typical dairy, corn and soybeans. One product not so well known is tobacco.
By Jeanette Servin
Eureka!! After looking in all the wrong years for the year Dassel’s steel water tank was built, the date was finally found—the year was 1919. In the June 5, 1919, issue of The Dassel Dispatch, the following articles are found on the front page: (In Part)
As the DAHS is preparing to plan and install a seed corn exhibit, a great photo has surfaced. It came to light that Jeanette (Skalberg) Tomlinson was the first Dassel Seed Corn Jubilee Queen in late September of 1941.
Royalty for first Dassel Seed Corn Jubilee—1941. Marcia (Wreisner) Fredeen, Marian (Anderson) Haapala, Princesses Helen (Corkins) Berg, and Dorothy Swanson, Queen Jeanette, Princess Evelyn (Tormanen) Ramey, and Ruda (Carlson) Olson, and Mary (Peel) Rindahl. Jeanette remembers that the princesses dresses were shades of purple.

Bandstand Park, located on Atlantic Avenue and Fourth Street in Dassel, is named after a renovated bandstand in the park, and is also commonly referred to as Railroad Park. People frequently gather there for community events such as Dairy Berry Day in June and the farmers market, open each Friday typically from June to October.
Excitement is often heard from Dassel Ballpark, which is located on Second Street and Linart Avenue, on the north side of Dassel. In the summertime, it is home to the Dassel-Cokato Saints amateur baseball team. The field is also used by youth leagues. Its well-groomed field, bleachers, and scoreboard makes this a popular venue to enjoy America’s favorite pastime. Many people also enjoy tossing horseshoes at the park.
Breeds Park, located on the eastern central stretch of Highway 12 in Dassel, encompasses a full city block.
It features several large shade trees and is the site of the Dassel Area Veterans Memorial. In 2009, a veterans pavilion was also added. Travelers and longtime residents frequently make use of the amenities at the park, including tennis and basketball courts, picnic shelters, playground equipment, barbecue pits, and horseshoe pits.
Mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding are exciting activities often enjoyed on rustic trails in the Dassel-Darwin County Park, midway between Dassel and Darwin on Highway 12. There is also a winter sledding hill and a primitive camp site for groups, by reservation.
School House Park in Darwin is the site of Twine Ball Day, the second Saturday of August; and a farmers market on Saturday mornings from May to September. The park also provides a swing set, playground equipment, and picnic shelter.
There are many heroes in the world, most of whom never planned to be one. Heroes seem to happen in the spur of the moment, when there is little time to think, and actions just take over.
Dassel has a hero like that, now long gone, but no less a hero. In April 1916, L. Peter Crumberg of Litchfield, and previously from Dassel, and Martin Martinson of Dassel were working as employees of a section crew for the railroad. They were on a repair project on the main track in Litchfield near the stockyards.
